2025 - Year in Review, Movies
My standard year in review for what movies I watched! 2025 Edition
I don’t normally go super heavy on movies, and 2025 was no exception in that regard. The last time I was a regular in theaters was when Alamo Drafthouse was only a block or two away from my apartment back in Austin, which meant that it was a great date spot for dinner. As it is, I don’t really think many movies are coming out that justify current theater prices or putting up with audiences that tend to do a lot of loud phone use. Anyway, most of this was all rewatch instead of branching out into too many new films.
The Konosuba movie was… mostly pretty fun. Konosuba’s dorks are at their best when they love each other, and Kasuma+Megumin is very cute. The horrible undercurrent of transphobia and making light of sexual assault (in… a different way from usual, for the series) though? Ehhhh. Strongly mirror Geoff Thew’s opinion here, in that if those two scenes were cut the movie would be an easy recommend for Konosuba fans, instead of a highly qualified one. The Crimson Demons continue to be one of the funniest parts of the entire world of Konosuba, giving them a movie was a great choice.
The musicals theme continued, with more Disney, stage recordings, and of course K-Pop Demon Hunters. It’s… okay. I can see how people think it’s amazing, it is absolutely better than a lot of recent offerings from Pixar, but I just wasn’t that impressed personally. The songs are pretty catchy, I can’t fault that at all. Can I count Kubo as a musical? Probably not, but it was gorgeous. I can’t believe I waited this long to see it.
Sam (2015) is a cry for help in movie form. I hope the director has started transition in the last ten years and is happy. It’s a better movie than it has any right to be, just like I felt about The Clan’s Heir is a Trans Woman last year. If you’re looking for a trans flavored But I’m a Cheerleader for your movie night, go for it.
Closing out the year, Wake Up Dead Man did it again. It’s new enough that I’m going to try to be as vague as possible, because if you like these movies you should absolutely watch it, and going in with as little information as possible I think makes them more enjoyable. What I can say? The Knives Out series keeps hitting, and I continue to not really know how to rank them. I think I like it more than the first one overall, I think it executed its ideas better than the second one. The religious theme is going to hit some people awfully hard even if it completely misses for others, and it takes quite a while for Benoit to show up at all. I think my favorite scene is the somewhat impromptu confession on the phone, it just really makes me want things to be okay for our non-Benoit lead.
